Piling is essential in building structures but is often overlooked by many when planning a project. While the technique has evolved over time, piling can be traced back to very early in humanities history, with ancient civilizations using them as far back as 6000 years ago. But what is piling and why have we been using it all these years?

Read on for a beginners guide to piling.

WHAT IS PILING?

Piling is a common construction technique that involves creating deep foundations for a building, to make sure the structure of the building is sturdy. It works by inserting large amounts of material into the ground, often wood, steel and concrete, to create a sturdy base for a construction project. These materials are used because of their strength, as the underground structure has to be strong enough to support large and very heavy buildings. Without piling, buildings are very vulnerable and may not stay up very long.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF PILING

There are a few different types of piling that are used:

CFA PILING

Continuous Flight Auger (CFA) piling involves a continuous hollow stem auger being drilled into the ground and then filled with concrete and reinforced with a steel cage. It’s great for installation in built-up and inner-city areas because it is a relatively noise and vibration-free method.

SFA OPEN BORE PILING

Sectional Flight Auger (SFA) Piling is when a pile is drilled into the ground and then filled with concrete and supported by a reinforced steel cage. SFA piling is usually used on areas of unobstructed ground where the ground is unstable.

MINI PILING

Mini piling is used when you are working in an area with restricted access or a small space, especially inside spaces. They’re great for when there are poor ground conditions, large design loads and when there is limited access.

SCD PILING

Steel Cased Drive (SCD) Piling is great for contaminated land and ground with high water tables. They are bottom-driven using either a drop hammer piling rig or a grundomat.
