We at Capital Piling Ltd are thrilled to announce our official sponsorship of Dorking Wanderers Football Club.
Used as singular piles, or as part of a pile group, CFA Piling, known as Continuous Flight Auger Piling is a key component of a building or structure’s foundations and is a piling method used in many structural foundations, buildings or bridges to this day. Below, we provide a brief guide to CFA Piling to define its importance, applications and advantages.
CFA PIling provides a continuous hollow stem auger drilled into the ground that is then filled with concrete and reinforced with a steel cage. It’s great for installation in environmentally sensitive, or built-up and inner-city areas because it is a mostly noise and vibration-free method. It is suitable for ground surfaces or strata such as:
● Sand
● Gravel
● Silt
● Clay
● Soft rock
Developed in the 1940s and first introduced to the UK in the 60s, CFA Piling has become a highly popular construction technique to create deep foundations for a building, providing a solid, sturdy structure that can withstand the test of time.
Typically involving the insertion of wooden, steel or concrete piles into the ground, these CFA Piles provide the essential foundational stability required to support large and heavy structures. CFA Piling is a cast-in-situ process, which ensures the piles themselves are constructed using a hollow stem continuous flight auger. The auger then drills to the necessary depth to allow for the pumping of high-quality concrete through the hollow stem itself.
As this concrete process happens, the auger is extracted in a rotating motion, as to remove the ground material, before the concrete is extended to ground level and a steel reinforcement cage is plunged into the remaining wet concrete, thus providing structure.
CFA PIling comes with many significant advantages. These typically include:
● Low levels of vibration, noise and disruption
● Quick and relatively straight-forward installation
● Highly economical, especially if used on a mass scale
● Ideal for a range of difficult ground conditions
● Depth of over 35mm
● Diameters between 450mm-1200mm
As with any piling method, there will always be drawbacks, below we outline the issues to be aware of:
● Less economical on small-scale projects
● Not recommended for surfaces that may alternate between hard and soft grounds or changing strata.
● Limited capacity for bending moments or lateral and tension forces
As you can see., CFA Piling is a vital foundation for many buildings, structures and bridges, and are highly popular for large-scale construction projects across the world.
