Piling is one of the most common techniques used in construction today, but how far back can we trace back this technique?
Keep reading for a brief history of piling, and how the process has evolved to where it is today.
Piling is the act of making foundations that are driven or bored into the ground to help with the bearing capacity of a space. It’s helpful when the soil or ground conditions may be inadequate for heavy construction, offering a way to build on this land safely and without any risk. Site surveys are carried out to ensure the pile foundation is carefully designed to the exact conditions of the soil and load.
While not as exact a science as it is today, piling has been used for thousands of years. Piling actually dates back to ancient times, approximately 4th Century BC, when people would use piles to construct homes on weak soil conditions close to rivers. This would usually consist of wooden piles hammered into the ground to provide a solid foundation.
Piles provided a range of benefits for those who constructed them. Evidence has been found of lake dwellers using piling to elevate their homes and protect them from attack. The raised buildings would be great protection from any attackers, giving the dwellers an instant higher ground advantage.
Romans used a piling structure to construct bridges in Britain, using timber piles driven into the river bed. The Romans are often seen as the precursors to modern-day piling techniques, with cities such as Venice still relying on some of the piling constructed all those years ago.
While technology has developed since then, piling was originally done using timber branches trimmed down to the ideal size then driven into the ground using mauls, rams and drivers. As the years went by, techniques were further developed to make piling easier and less practical, relying more on machines for efficiency rather than man-made power.
Different materials also began to be used for piles, such as steel and concrete. These materials are much more capable of sustaining bending, compressive and tensile forces.
