When we think of modern architecture, it’s likely that great feats such as the Burj Khalifa, the Empire State or the Shard spring to mind. Though these mighty buildings may be continents apart, they all have one thing in common; strong foundations. There’s no denying that the 20th and 21st centuries witnessed the construction of many architectural wonders, but this desire to create comfortable and unique environments is nothing new.
If we were to cast our thoughts back to the ancient Egyptians, it is the pyramids that spring to mind. Further back still, the clay huts of neolithic civilisations provided a place to sleep and shelter; almost every example of construction since the dawn of mankind has utilised foundations in one form or another.
Read on to discover our brief guide to foundations through the ages.
As mentioned above, some of the earliest examples of foundations are believed to have been constructed by stone age civilisations. Owing to the lack of remaining examples, it is presumed that these structures would have used wood, clay and stone to erect basic shelters, homes and storage areas.
A few thousand years later, in other parts of the world, advancements in building techniques and resources led to further developments in foundations. It is believed that Babylonian monuments were built upon mats made from reeds, protecting the base from the soil and moisture below. Similarly, the great pyramids were built using stone blocks which would sit upon the bedrock and sand below.
Fast forward a few thousand years and foundations as we know them became commonplace. Owing to developments in scientific understanding and material use, the early stages of the construction process became much more complex. During the 19th century, the mass production of concrete meant that the foundations could be constructed in much shorter amounts of time and with relative ease.
Though techniques came a long way during the 19th century, most foundations remained shallow and unsuitable for buildings taller than a few storeys. This all changed during the 20th century as raft and slab foundations became widely used. In 1984, building regulations were introduced that specified the need for individual foundation design, depending on the requirements of the building in question. At this point, steel piling became much more popular owing to its cost-effectiveness and accessibility.
It goes without saying that foundations are an integral part of any construction project and should be planned with due care and attention. If you’re on the hunt for high-quality foundation and piling contractors, look no further. Here at Capital Piling Ltd, we’re pleased to serve customers across the country.
