WHY USE A PILING CONTRACTOR?

The importance of using piling in the foundation of a building or large structure is imperative, providing the deep column support required to build skyscrapers, apartment complexes, office towers, supermarkets and everything in between. Acting as the foundation for such a long list of vital constructions, finding the right piling contractor for your work is essential. There are many different piling services offered by piling contractors, and it’s important you seek a piling contractor who can cover the following:

CFA PILING

Continuous Flight Auger, (CFA), Piles are designed for a speedy installation process, with the unique ability to be both drilled and concreted in one continuous operation. Once casting is complete, reinforced concrete is added to prove further strength and stability, ensuring the pile is able to resist the full range of structural loading.

A hollow stem CFA is rotated into the soil at a designated depth before concrete or grout is then pumped through the hollow stem to fill the cavity space created as the auger is slowly removed. A reinforcement cage is then placed directly into the fresh concrete where the auger once was.

CFA Piling is a common piling method used in urban and built-up environments, such as inner-city developments, due to the speed of installation, efficiency and relatively low levels of noise and vibration. Below are some of the key applications and advantages of CFA piling:

  • Provides Structural Support
  • Provides Earth Retention
  • Prevents Landslides/Protects Existing Building
  • Infrastructure Projects; Road/Bridge Construction, Flood Protection
  • Cost-Efficient
  • Resists Compressive, Uplift & Lateral Loads
  • Versatile - Installed In Soil, Sand, Clay, Slits, Gravel & Soft Rock
  • Quick Installation
  • Low Noise/Vibration Levels
SFA OPEN BORE PILING

Much like a CFA Piling solution, Sectional Flight Auger, (SFA), Piling involves a pile being drilled directly into the ground before concrete and reinforced steel cages are installed in the cavity space to form a pile. An auger bored ‘replacement’ pile, an SFA is designed for both soil extraction and the pumping of concrete under pressure. The pile is formed through the use of a helical screw, known as the auger, that’s fitted with a hollow stem bored into the ground to the required depth. Concreting is then achieved by pumping fluid concrete through the auger’s hollow stem, which delivers the concrete to the bottom of the pile bore.

SFA Piling solutions are typically implemented in areas where there are expected levels of cohesive soils, such as clay, chalk and sand, offering a stability and support system for even the most inconsistent of base materials. Below are just some of the key applications and advantages of SFA Piling:

  • Used Across Housing, Infrastructure and Industrial Projects
  • Structural Support and Strength
  • Ideal for Areas of Unobstructed Ground, Restricted Access or Low Working Height
  • Minimal Noise/Vibration
  • Used In Smaller Areas Where Soils Are Granular, Water-Based Clay, or Chalk
  • Quick and Efficient
SCD PILING

Steel Cased Driven, (PCD), Piling, is a lightweight solution often implemented in areas where the underlying soils are soft. Clean and tidy, an internal hammer is used to force the lightweight steel tube into the ground with relative ease, until a competent load-bearing stratum is achieved. Once this has occurred, the steel tubes are filled with concrete and reinforced steel, offering support and connection to the reinforced foundations cast on top.

SCD Piling is implemented across many industries, providing key underpinning and foundation support for both domestic and commercial premises in both old and new installations. Below are just some of the key advantages and applications of SCD Piling.

  • Underpinning Domestic Developments
  • Foundations for Commercial Premises
  • Small & Lightweight
  • Ideal for Areas with Limited Headroom/Restricted Access
  • Clean & Tidy – No Spoil Removal
  • Low Noise & Vibration
  • Areas with contaminated land, gravelly ground or high water tables
GROUND BEAMS

Used as an alternative to steel, ground beams are structural beams specifically designed to help transfer loads across their length to span between walls, columns or piles. They’re often installed to support brick or blockwork or edges for concrete base slabs. Ground beams are installed in trenches excavated at a specific depth and width, whilst being supported by RC ground cages. RC Ground Cages are constructed and installed into the trench, then filled with concrete to create a solid base for your ground beams. Ground beams are a suitable solution for times when:

  • Brickwork Support is Necessary
  • Land Is Swampy or Prone to Water
  • The Soil Quality is Poor
RC SLAB FOUNDATIONS

Designed to spread the load across a large flat surface area, RC Slab Foundations are an ideal solution for soils that are highly compressible or where other foundation solutions or materials may not be suitable. Once the ground is brought to the necessary level, reinforced steel is installed in line with the design requirements and concrete is added. RC slab foundations are particularly effective when:

  • The Land is Composed of Low Density/Pressure Soil
  • Walls/Columns Are Too Close Together
  • Overall Load of Project Is Low (e.g. 1-2 Storey Buildings)
  • Soil Is Contaminated Or Has High Sediments‍‍
SFA GROUT INJECTION

Unlike SFA Piling, SFA Grout Injection drills the sectional augers, (hollow stems), into the ground to the required depth, as opposed to a single channel. Once this required depth is reached, a suitable grout mix is implemented via the piling rig and the hollow stem augers. Once this is complete, the augers are slowly removed and replaced with reinforced steel cages. SFA Piling is an ideal solution for:

  • Nearly All Soil Types
  • Most Constructions
  • Constructions Near Other Buildings or Built-Up Areas, (Inner-City).

SFA Grout Injection is relatively noise and vibration-free, making it a popular solution for inner-city developments.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A PILING CONTRACTOR?

There are several important factors one must consider when sourcing a reliable, professional piling contractor besides the all-important services they provide. It's vital you research the culture, experience and customer response of any potential piling contractor you may consider, to ensure you have the best possible chance of securing the right service for you. Below, we run through the key factors you should consider when looking for a proven piling contractor.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

Experience and proven registration are imperative in choosing a piling contractor, with important regulatory requirements across the industry that must be met. You should only consider piling contractors who satisfy these requirements and have preferably been accredited by the British Drilling Association. Experience matters, so ensure you have carried out as much research into as many local piling contractors as possible, to provide yourself with suitable options.

REFERRALS & REVIEWS

As an extension of the above; you should always seek companies who have worked on similarly sized projects like yours and take note of their track record, reviews and testimonials. When dealing with any professional contractor, ensuring you have carried out extensive research is vital, perhaps you have friends who can make recommendations? Or you have read an endless stream of positive reviews for your chosen supplier, these are all important in ensuring you are choosing the best possible piling contractor.
